MARATHON MONT BLANC: RACES VK-10k-42k-80k

Chamonix was ready to get 7,000 trail runners this weekend with the Marathon Mont Blanc (you can check the road book here). Temperature was hot and in two months many of these runners will come back to participate in the UTMB. Both events are very popular in Chamonix and even lots of elite comes to dispute it.

The race: There were not many surprise even there was a big pool of elite runners and at Vallorcine (18k) we already have about twelve candidates for the victory. At that point Aritx Egea was ahead of the group with Kilian at the back. Runners were wrapped by lots of people as we can see in the photo below.

.

During the first kilometers, Kilian remained in the leading group of 10 which was led until Tré Le Champ 2 (31k), by  Aritz Egea. Kilian was in second, behind Egea, on the ascent to Col de Posettes (22k, 1998m). “On the ascent to Posettes I could see it was going well. After that I knew there was a technical descent where I wasn’t going to lose time. I tried to set a good speed, aiming to go a little faster but controlling so as not to get cramp or heat stroke,” Jornet said.

.

Kilian attacked a little before Flégère (37k) to take the lead till the end in a time of 3h54’54’’, followed by the Swiss Marc Lauenstein (3h58’15’’) and the Norwegian Stian Angermund-Vik (4h00’07’’).

.

The winner in the women’s category was Ruth Croft, with Ida Nilsson second and Eli Gordón third. Eli Gordón was very brave and the beginning,  fighting with Megan Kimmel in the first half at the cross of Vallorcine and changin postions with Ruth Croft and Ida Nilsson after. However Ruth Croft got the lead to the end, followed by Ida and Eli. To complete the top 5 Anne Lise Rousset in 4h53 and Megan in 4h55.
