Designing for trail running gear is quite a battleground where form and function intermingle, perhaps more than in any other running specialy, given the mountain harsh requirements. Yet, however much we pretend to look objective and rational when testing or considering items in-depth the dire truth is that as of today most of the purchase decisions by trail runners are based upon the looks. Sound it as it may 🙂

On the other hand, it is also true that if a brand is to keep the consumers coming back to shops for repeat purchase, ot getting them to prescribe their shoes to friends & family, those items sold must truly deliver function. Let us bear in mind that running up and down the mountains is most probably as great a challenge as any sports shoe might come across.

Trail running shoes design was the subject of our interview below, held at the renowned Friedrichshagen outdoor fair with Adidas Outdoor design director, Christian Zwinger, taking the Adidas Terrex Agravic (winner 2015 award at the fair) as a reference product, to learn how and why all the features are considered, weighed versus other options and finally built in and welded together.
