Skyrunning World Series: Dolomites skyrace (22k/D+1750m) Results & photos. Kilian Jornet, winner and new record. Mireia Miro 3rd.

The Skyrunning 2012 season celebrated last Sunday  the 15th Dolomites Skyrace (22k/D+1750m). The demanding Trentino Vertical Kilometer held on thursday did not have a spanish winner. But in the skyrace, Kilian Jornet pushed relentlessly to achieve not only victory, buy a new course record. Bravo!. In the women´s field, Mireia Miró held its first “long” race after her September 2011 injury recovery. She made it to 3rd place, behind Salomon Running mates Emelie Forsberg and Kasie Enman.  Luis Alberto Hernando and Blanca María Serrano were 4th in their fields, adding up to a total of 4 spaniards among the top10 spots.

The skyrunning 2012 edition at Dolomites was hugely successful: Nice enough weather for the whole course to be taken on, all the very sttep way up to the 3.152m of Piz Boe. New men’s and women’s records, new nations on the podium. Kilian Jornet cut down the long-standing course record to 2h01’52”, while Romanian Ionut Zinca was second in 2h06’29” and Mitjia Coswelli from Slovenia, a close third 17 seconds later.

The Salomon Running women’s team had a clean sweep at the podium, led by promising newcomer Emelie Forsberg from Sweden who rushed down to 2h26’00”, slicing a hefty four minutes off the women’s record. American Kasie Enman was second in 2h28’09”and Spain’s Mireia Mirò, last year’s race winner coming back from long recovery of an injury, was third in 2h30’08”. Their race pace was outstanding, with all three of them beating the previous record.

After the previous day downpour and fears for another summit cancellation, the day dawned clear and sunny, with the cool conditions chiping in for fast times. Kilian Jornet even took his time on the downhill near the summit, where he carefully picked his way around the ice before accelerating to a fast finish.

Emelie Forsberg, an explosive downhill specialist, loved the experience and the scenery, despite the fact that in her native Sweden steep ascents are, of course, non-existent.Forsberg, after Friday’s Vertical Kilometer® and today’s spectacular win, now heads the Skyrunner® World Series ranking.

SKYRUNNER WORLD SERIES RANKINGS: SPAIN TAKES 4/6 TOP SPOTS

The Skyrunner World Series 2012 womens ranking now has Emelie Forsberg on the top rung, followed by Spain’s Blanca Maria Serrano and Britain’s Lauren Jeska. The men’s top three are all Spanish: Kilian Jornet, Luis Alberto Hernando and Jokin Lizeaga.

The climb to the summit of the 3,152m Biz Boè, with a daunting 1750 vertical metres from Canazei, represented one of the toughest proving grounds for this distance, with several young talents emerging, like France’s twenty-year old Matheo Jacquemoud, an excellent fourth today.

The Series moves on to the US with the Speedgoat 50 on July 28 where Kilian Jornet begins his assault on American soil, following on with an attempt at the long-standing Pikes Peak Marathon record in August. Next week also features the popular Giir di Mont in Lecco, Italy on July 29 with a rich international line-up, many of the runners following on from here.
