Trail Running Spain 2012: Aragon Official race calendar

Aragon is the spanish region (Capital: Saragossa) just south of the Central Pyreenes. It has traditionally been the main playground for spanish mountaneers as it boasts the highest concentration of peaks surpassing 3.000 meters. That geographic fact, coupled with its low population density and very well preserved wilderness no doubt explain why trail running around this area is very much enjoyed by spaniards from all over the nation.

Aragon enjoys splendid and varied mountain landscapes: It leads the list of big peaks in Spain, which icons such as Aneto (3,404 m), king of the Pyrenees, Monte Perdido (3,355 m) and Perdiguero (3,221 m), among many others.  Any mountain enthusiast is bound to discover here a perfect playground for his activities. Be it rock climbing at the Mallos de Riglos, paragliding at Castejón de Sos or even canyoning. In fact, Aragón may rightly claim to be not only the heart and soul of spanish canyoning, but is one of the great whitewater areas in Europe.

The National Park of Ordesa y Monte Perdido, right at the french border, is a personal favorite: Wild and rugged, with over 1.000 meters drop canyons, frozen lake caverns, waterfalls everywhere and varied wildlife.  Life at the valleys in these mountains has preserved most of the old rural traditions. wich makes it specially woth taking some days after a rece to enjoy those of Hecho, Canfranc, Tena or Benasque, to name a few.  Not to mention the Santiago pilgrim way, which makes its entry into Aragon by Somport and crosses over all the north of the region.

Little wonder then, that local runners and spaniards from all regions alike flock to its trail races and championships, which are among the leading ones in the country in terms of landscape beauty and competitive field. Let us not forget that the current skyrunner world champ, Luis Alberto Hernando,  lives and trains at Jaca, and not by chance.
